• Michael Delaney


    Michael Delaney was admitted to practice in 1964 and, until the establishment of Delaney Lawyers in 2001, was a Partner, Senior Partner and ultimately Consultant with Geoffrey See, Gillis & Co, Gillis Delaney and Gillis Delaney Brown. The energy and commitment to excellence which made those firms so successful remains with Delaney Lawyers today.

    Formerly, Michael was extensively engaged in commercial and general litigation including a Privy Council Appeal. For many years now Michael has been at the forefront of family law and with a wide range of connections within the legal profession as well as the wider community. He has been involved in many leading family law cases since the creation of the Family court of Australia in 1975. Michael has also been involved in the training and development of many prominent Family lawyers in practice today within the Sydney region.

    Michael is a mediator, a member of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, and was an organiser of both the Australian Family Lawyers Conference and the Australian Lawyers Conference. He was the organiser of the law Society’s Annual Sailing Day for many years.

    Whilst most of his practice in recent years has been devoted to the area of family law and related areas, Michael has a wealth of experience in corporate law, commercial litigation, and criminal law.


    Graeme Hearl


    Graeme Hearl was admitted to practice in 1976 and has practiced almost exclusively in the area of family law. From 1984 through to 1989 he was a Deputy Registrar in the Family Court of Australia at Sydney, and was for a time Acting Deputy Principal Registrar. He was also an ex officio member of the Law Society of New South Wales Family Law Committee, and a member of the first Liaison Committee between the Family court of Australia and the NSW Local Court.

    Graeme is a member of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, a long standing member of the Legal Aid Commission of New South Wales’ panel of Independent Children’s Lawyers, a former member of the Legal Aid Review Committee, and an accredited specialist in Family Law.

    Graeme has also been a presenter at Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) seminars for many years.

  • Rachael Abbott


    Rachael Abbott was admitted to practice on 7 October 2011. She had previously worked as an Assistant Clerk at Waratah Chambers, one of Sydney’s pre-eminent Family Law Chambers.

    Rachael has worked on some of the firm’s biggest cases in recent times, including those involving international relocation, complex commercial causes and difficult children’s matters.

    Rachael works closely with Michael Delaney and Graeme Hearl on many of their matters, but is developing her own client base and reference network.

    Rachael’s research skills provide an invaluable resource for Delaney Lawyers and her eye for detail is second to none. She is held in high regard by all Counsel whom she briefs.

  • Andrew Kertesz


    Andrew graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts and Law. He received a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 2008.

    From 2010 to 2012 Andrew was employed as a Deputy Associate to a Judge of the Federal Circuit Court, sitting exclusively in Family Law matters. Andrew joined Delaney Lawyers in 2013. He brings to the firm his knowledge of court practice and procedure.

    Andrew also has experience acting as a community legal advocate. He handles most of the firms A.V.O. matter and uses his extensive research skills on many of the firm’s cases.


    Petrina was admitted to practice in 1998 having worked for a number of years as a paralegal with Gillis Delaney Brown.

    From 1999 to 2001 she worked in the Corporate Advisory Section Mergers and Acquisitions at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (as it was then known) and from 2001 to 2003 worked in Mergers and Acquisitions with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London.

    Following her recovery from a debilitating illness after a number of years Petrina joined Delaney Lawyers in early 2014 working extensively with Michael Delaney on large commercial Family Law matters. She brings to Delaney Lawyers a wealth of experience in both Family Law and commercial litigation and corporate advisory areas with a strong eye for detail.


    Jennifer has 20 years experience as a secretary/paralegal in litigation. Jenny joined Delaney Lawyers in mid 2006. She is responsible for all of the firm’s day-to-day administration, organisation of matters, liaison with clients and billing.

    Jennifer works closely with all of our solicitors on their matters and is able to assist clients at times when the lawyer having the conduct of a particular matter is in court or otherwise temporarily unavailable.
